Highway Lighting Technician (Electronic Technical Specialist II)

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking motivated, safety-conscious individuals to join our Roadway Lighting crew.

About the Role

In this role, you will perform critical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on roadway lighting systems along state freeways and signalized intersections to keep Utah highways safe for the traveling public.

This is a hands-on, safety-sensitive field position. Crew members work directly with high-voltage electrical systems, operate at heights exceeding 40 feet, and work near live traffic in all outdoor weather conditions. UDOT provides comprehensive safety protocols, specialized gear, and ongoing technical training.

Position Information

Here is some important information about this position:

  • Salary: $23.23-$38.90 (Commensurate with experience/level)

  • FT/PT Status: Full-time

  • Background Check: You must successfully pass a criminal history check.

  • Drug Test: This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and post-hire random drug and alcohol screening.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshooting & Field Repairs: Locate underground conduit/boxes, diagnose electrical power issues, repair wiring, and service luminaire fixtures.
  • Electrical Work: Safely perform work on 240/480V single-phase power circuits while maintaining traffic safety protocols.
  • Asset Tracking: Manage asset inventories, log maintenance, and track work orders using GIS and ATOM software systems (training provided).
  • On-Call & Emergency Response: Participate in a rotational after-hours on-call schedule, responding to field emergencies during nights, weekends, and holidays. This includes statewide travel with some overnight stays.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for the Electronic Technical Specialist II level, applicants must possess:

  • Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of combined education, training, or professional work experience in electrical or technical trades.
  • Licensure: Active license as a Master, Journeyman, or Apprentice Electrician in the State of Utah.
  • Driver's License: Valid driver's license and willingness to travel state-wide (including occasional overnight stays).

Underfill Option

Applicants with at least six (6) months of related education, training, or experience who do not yet meet the two-year experience requirement or hold an electrician license may be considered for an underfill appointment as an Electronic Technical Specialist I.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to applicants who possess one or more of the following:

  • Current license as a Journeyman or Master Electrician license in the State of Utah.
  • Current Utah Apprentice Electrician licensure with active enrollment as a 3rd/4th-year apprentice.
  • Direct professional experience maintaining roadway lighting, utility networks, or heavy commercial electrical systems.

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands & Hazards: Involves significant physical exertion (lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, bending, and walking over rough terrain). Exposure to hazardous working conditions requiring specialized safety equipment, including work on high-voltage power lines (up to 600V), heights exceeding 40 to 100 feet, working adjacent to live traffic, and operating in severe outdoor weather conditions.
