High School English as a Second Language Teacher

About This Role

This high school teaching role involves instructing English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, planning engaging programs of study, and creating a positive learning environment. The teacher will guide students toward curriculum goals, assess their progress, and maintain accurate records.

Responsibilities

• Meet and instruct assigned classes in designated locations and times
• Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students
• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for student maturity and interests
• Guide the learning process toward achieving district curriculum goals, establishing and communicating clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects
• Prepare for assigned classes, showing written evidence of preparation upon request
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with physical limitations and student needs
• Strive to implement the district’s philosophy of education, instructional goals, objectives, and performance expectations through instruction and action
• Assess student accomplishments regularly, provide progress reports, and communicate with parents as necessary
• Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
• Diagnose student learning challenges regularly, seeking assistance from district specialists as required
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
• Follow the SPS code of conduct for the classroom, consistent with administrative policies, and develop fair and just rules of classroom behavior
• Plan and supervise assignments for paraprofessionals, and make written evaluations as required
• Maintain an ongoing program of professional growth that satisfies district requirements and personal expectations
• Take an active part in the contractually approved teacher evaluation process, contributing to a mutual agreement concerning the results
• Attend building and district meetings to promote communication and mutual decision-making among staff, held during the extended day
• Attend established traditional school-sponsored activities (e.g., Back to School Night, Open House, programs, activities) as agreed upon by the building administrator and faculty
• Contribute to district and building decisions regarding budget, facilities, curriculum, and personal well-being
• Strive to maintain and improve professional competence

Requirements

• Highly qualified with required competency in the content area
• Appropriate content/program area educator license (English as a Second Language) and grade level (5-12) licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
