Position Overview
PsychPlus is seeking an experienced General Counsel to serve as the company's chief legal advisor and strategic business partner. Reporting directly to executive leadership, the General Counsel will oversee all legal, regulatory, compliance, governance, employment, and risk management matters across the organization.
This executive leadership role will partner closely with senior leadership to support the company's continued growth while ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state healthcare regulations. The General Counsel will lead legal strategy, negotiate complex commercial transactions, advise on corporate governance, oversee litigation, manage outside counsel, and provide practical legal guidance that enables business growth while minimizing risk.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned healthcare attorney with significant experience supporting physician group practices, digital health organizations, and high-growth healthcare companies.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Strategy & Executive Counsel

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor to the executive leadership team.
  • Provide practical legal guidance that aligns with the company's strategic objectives.
  • Support business expansion initiatives, partnerships, acquisitions, and new service offerings.
  • Advise leadership on legal implications of strategic business decisions.

Healthcare Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure organizational compliance with applicable federal and state healthcare regulations.
  • Advise on:
    • Physician practice operations
    • Corporate Practice of Medicine (CPOM)
    • HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules
    • Telehealth laws and regulations
    • Stark Law
    • Anti-Kickback Statute
    • False Claims Act
    • State licensing and regulatory requirements
  • Lead compliance initiatives, policy development, audits, and regulatory response efforts.

Contract Negotiation & Commercial Transactions
Draft, review, negotiate, and manage a wide range of commercial agreements, including:

  • Vendor agreements
  • Partnership and strategic alliance agreements
  • Employment and independent contractor agreements
  • Business Associate Agreements (BAAs)
  • Technology and SaaS agreements
  • Licensing agreements
  • Confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements
  • Professional services agreements

Risk Management

  • Identify legal and regulatory risks across the organization.
  • Develop practical strategies to mitigate operational and compliance risks.
  • Monitor changes in healthcare laws and advise leadership on emerging legal developments.
  • Support enterprise-wide risk management initiatives.

Corporate Governance

  • Advise executive leadership and the Board of Directors on governance matters.
  • Maintain corporate records and governance documentation.
  • Support board meetings, resolutions, and corporate compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate governance best practices.

Employment & Labor Law

  • Advise Human Resources and leadership on employment-related legal matters.
  • Review employment policies, investigations, disciplinary actions, restrictive covenants, and executive agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws.

Litigation & Outside Counsel Management

  • Oversee litigation, claims, investigations, and dispute resolution.
  • Manage relationships with outside counsel.
  • Evaluate litigation strategies and settlement opportunities.
  • Coordinate responses to subpoenas, regulatory inquiries, and legal investigations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law and membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
  • 10+ years of progressive legal experience with significant healthcare law experience.
  • Extensive experience supporting physician group practices, multi-site healthcare organizations, or healthcare management companies.
  • Deep knowledge of:
    • HIPAA
    • Telehealth regulations
    • Corporate Practice of Medicine
    • Stark Law
    • Anti-Kickback Statute
    • Healthcare compliance
    • Corporate governance
    • Commercial contracting
    • Employment law
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating complex commercial agreements.
  • Strong business judgment and executive presence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to balance legal risk with practical business objectives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience serving as General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, Associate General Counsel, or Senior In-House Healthcare Counsel.
  • Experience supporting digital health, behavioral health, physician practice management, or healthcare technology organizations.
  • Experience leading legal strategy within a high-growth, multi-state healthcare organization.
  • Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets.
  • Familiarity with mergers and acquisitions, healthcare transactions, and corporate restructuring.
