Health Information Technician I

About This Role

This role supports patient care, compliance, and the integrity of medical records within a dedicated healthcare team. As a Health Information Technician, you will play a vital part in ensuring accurate, secure, and timely access to patient information, supporting providers, patients, and the broader healthcare system. Your attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality will help maintain the highest standards of care and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

• Review medical records for completeness and accuracy, ensuring compliance with established standards and regulatory requirements
• Process and fulfill requests for release of patient information, ensuring proper authorization and adherence to privacy laws (HIPAA and applicable state/federal regulations)
• Provide customer service to patients, providers, attorneys, and agencies requesting medical records, including in-person and phone interactions
• Prepare records for legal proceedings, including subpoenas and court cases, and assist with documentation or testimony as needed
• Maintain accurate tracking and documentation of all record requests and correspondence within hospital systems
• Assist with vital statistics processes, including preparing and submitting birth certificates and related documentation

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Two (2) years of experience in a health information management department of a hospital or allied medical care facility, or in an allied health or medical program (e.g., nursing unit, admissions department, clinic, etc.), which included duties such as filing medical records, posting data onto medical records, cross-indexing data, compiling numerical data from medical records or reports, typing/transcribing medical reports, and work of a comparable nature

Substitutions Allowed:

• Excess Specialized Experience may be substituted for Medical Records Experience
• Successful completion of an associate degree in a health information technology program (HIT) accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) or recognized by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), may be substituted for all of the requirements for two (2) years of medical records experience
• Successful completion of an associate degree in a health information technology program (HIT) in a foreign country whose professional association has an agreement of reciprocity with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) may be substituted for two (2) years of medical records experience
• Successful completion of the correspondence course or the AHIMA Independent Study Programs in health information technology (HIT) and an associate’s degree from an accredited college may be substituted for two (2) years of medical records experience
