Health Information Technician 1

About This Role

This Health Information Management (HIM) Technician 1 role involves maintaining patient electronic health records, ensuring that correct medical information is present and available for providers to have efficient patient visits. The position focuses on reconciling, prepping, scanning, and indexing medical records according to departmental policies and procedures, consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Ensure records are available in a timely manner to patients and providers
• Ensure the integrity of patient records
• Work both individually and collaboratively
• Effectively communicate with other team members
• Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures
• Safeguard University assets
• Maintain daily workflow, ensuring documents are acquired, prepared, and scanned in a timely and efficient manner
• Retrieve prior day discharge/visit documentation from assigned units daily
• Place records in the appropriate area for reconciliation and prepping
• Receive and process patient records following discharge
• Prep all documents received by removing staples, paper clips, sticky notes, rubber bands
• Tape torn documents and loose edges
• Stamp poor-quality originals as such
• Prepare all documents in number order
• Copy severely damaged documents so they can go through the scanning process without difficulty
• Scan documents and images into the Electronic Health System
• Index documents to the correct patient, encounter, and document type
• Ensure timely processing of electronic files from multifunction devices or email according to procedures
• Provide coverage to at least 1 Satellite facility
• Achieve and maintain departmental quality and productivity expectations

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 6 months of relevant experience
• Microsoft Office applications
• Electronic Health Records (EHR) system
• Computer proficiency
• Basic computer knowledge
• Ability to speak, read, write and to follow written and oral instructions
• High accuracy rate and organizational skills
• Proficient in typing and spelling
• Maintain compliance with HIPAA requirements and patient confidentiality

Nice to have:

• Registered Health Information Administration or Technician (RHIA or RHIT)
• Knowledge of medical terminology
