About This Role
Leading the engineering team to build the public internet for the world's non-public information is the core of this role, aiming to unlock significantly more data in scientific fields and industries. This position is for a leader who can guide an ambitious engineering team to open and de-silo the world's information, contributing to a global innovation boom.
Responsibilities
- Grow the engineering team from 10 to 15-20 within the next year
- Foster the culture of the engineering team, considering its fully remote, distributed, non-profit, open-source, ambitious, mission-driven nature, and pre-product market fit status
- Mentor tech leads
- Work with the engineering team to cultivate an engineering vision and strategy that delivers on the Chief Product Officer's product roadmap and Open Mined's overall mission, navigating challenges in tech transfer, integration science, cross-disciplinary work (distributed systems, cryptography, deep learning), pre-product market fit, and rapid pivots
- Provide final signoff on timeline estimates for features and cultivate a team that can meet timelines, managing expectations when adjustments are needed
- Ensure each member of the engineering team is aligned to the engineering strategy and Open Mined's mission, addressing challenges in communicating vision, balancing short-term and long-term focus, and translating across technical and non-technical stakeholders and audiences
- Own the long-term robustness and security of the software built by Open Mined
- Manage the tradeoff between codebase advancement and technical debt accumulation
- Manage uncertainty and support people experiencing uncertainty, especially in tech transfer, pre-product-market fit, ambitious goals, and frequent pivots
- Collaborate with the leadership team (fellow department leads and the executive director) to create the organization's strategic plan, including long-term, annual, and quarterly goals
- Be responsible for the quality of the codebase delivered to users, as a function of the culture, tradeoffs, and architecture stewarded
- Write some code, as this is a management role but also requires hands-on involvement
Requirements
- 2+ years experience managing 2+ layers of engineers in a fully remote organization, with a focus on managing managers
- 5+ years as a professional software developer (or similar), with the ability to empathize with and guide software engineers
- 3+ years experience in an organization of 25-50 people (can be cumulative across multiple organizations), demonstrating experience in organizations of this size
- 2+ years of senior leadership experience in a remote capacity (i.e., reporting to the CEO/ED), with experience managing remote teams
- 3+ years experience with Python and AI, as it would be difficult to up-skill on these while on the job
