Groundman

About This Role

Working on the ground, the Groundman assists line and network crew members by handling tools and heavy materials, digging holes, and performing other tasks related to the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground power lines. This role is crucial for supporting the crew and ensuring safety on job sites.

Responsibilities

• Pass tools to line crew or network crew members
• Act as a general helper on the ground
• Handle cables, conduit, and other materials as directed
• Glue conduits together
• Assist in setting transformers
• Assist line crew with setting poles by shoveling or piking
• Fill anchor holes
• Clear undergrowth from right-of-way using hand tools or saws
• Pile debris to clear paths
• Perform general clean-up of job sites following completion of work
• Position reels of electric cable beside trenches
• Lay heavy residential underground distribution (URD) cables in ditches and pads by shoveling fine sand around cable
• Assist network crew top man with lowering and raising molten metals and other heavy materials to the cable splicer working below in the vault
• Operate roto hammer to access vaults
• Notify customers of impending disruption of service while lines are under repair
• Flag traffic to protect employees and the public from injury
• Assist as directed in operating jackhammer or digging bars to break concrete or rocks
• Drive 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup truck to job site or to obtain supplies
• Report any and all accidents to the Foreman immediately
• Make the Foreman aware of any known potential safety hazards
• Ensure the safety of fellow crew members by following all safety guidelines

Requirements

• Good mechanical and electrical aptitude
• Strong team player with the ability to adapt to diverse team members
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions
• Ability to lift up to 80 lbs multiple times during a work shift
• Ability to climb, dig, work in tight spaces, on uneven surfaces, walking, stooping, and kneeling
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions
• Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team with co-workers
• Ability to pass motor vehicle and criminal background check
• Comply with drug-free workplace policy
• Willingness and ability to learn additional skills
• One (1) year of experience in a labor-intensive environment
