Graphic Designer

About This Role

Designing inspiring, award-winning art and craft books for an independent publisher is the core of this role for a talented Graphic Designer. The position involves conceptualising and managing book projects from start to finish, working collaboratively within a friendly, dynamic, and creative team.

Responsibilities

• Conceptualise, design, and manage all stages of book projects, from creating moodboards and working up initial and final designs, to colour proofing
• Execute a broad range of design styles appropriate for various age groups and art and craft subjects, with a strong sense of title branding
• Work collaboratively with the Head of Design and all members of the design, editorial, production, and in-house teams, from concept to final book
• Communicate effectively with artists as well as in-house and out-of-house teams
• Create detailed illustration and photography briefs, and provide guidance and feedback on artwork supplied from external sources
• Create print-ready PDFs for production
• Check proofs and ensure all titles are approved for press with a high standard of design
• Assist with Book Fair and Sales Conference preparation, updating catalogues when required
• Work with the Production team on reprint titles, adjusting, updating, correcting, and checking files when needed
• Keep up-to-speed on changing graphic and visual trends
• Help with art directing and planning in-house and location photo shoots alongside the photographer and book editor

Requirements

• Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
• Sufficient years' experience to make an immediate start
• Excellent communication skills
• Self-starter with a keen eye for detail
• Natural understanding of design and enthusiasm to develop skills further
• Drive and enthusiasm to become an intrinsic part of a dynamic, creative team

Nice to have:

• BA Hons or equivalent in design is preferred
• Knowledge or enjoyment in art and/or craft activities
• Confident at creative problem-solving across a wide variety of projects
• Motivated and hard-working team player with a positive attitude, willingness to learn and happy to work across different product categories
• Able to handle verbal and visual briefs
• Strong time management and organisation: able to plan, work flexibly and deliver to deadlines
• Excellent presentation skills
• Fast learner with attention to detail
• Proven experience in designing for print, with an eye for commercial appeal
• Experience working with licensed ranges desirable
