About the role
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a temporary full-time Genetic Counselor / Clinical Instructor (HS). The successful candidate will:
- Oversee the development, implementation and the maintenance of the prenatal genetic counseling services.
- Provide the obstetrical genetic risk assessments in collaboration with the Antenatal Testing Unit Director.
- Facilitate the genetic testing process, which includes obtaining the informed consent and disclosing the results to the patients for compliance measures.
- Provide the patients and the referring providers with the genetic testing results which include the risk estimates and recommendations.
- Collaborate and coordinate the patient care with the providers.
- Function as the liaison between the Antenatal Testing Unit and the genetic testing laboratories to address the test orders.
- Follow procedures and policies for adherence to the directives of the genetic counseling services for patients at a state-funded inner city hospital.
- Keep abreast of the developments in genetics and genomics for compliance measures.
- Attend applicable meetings and conferences.
Required Qualifications
- Board eligible or Board certified Genetic Counselor, preferably with 3+ years of genetic counseling experience.
- Must have the ability to function independently with minimal oversight and communicates, advises, writes, and consults in a professional manner.
- Must demonstrate good decision-making and judgement skills.
