General Counsel

About This Role

This General Counsel role is the first in-house legal hire for the company, tasked with building the legal function from scratch. It is a hands-on attorney's job, focused on managing the litigation portfolio, negotiating resolutions, and overseeing outside counsel, while also handling commercial agreements and advising HR.

Responsibilities

• Own the litigation portfolio, managing consumer and commercial matters across operating states, registering as in-house counsel where required, and directing local counsel for filings and court appearances
• Personally negotiate customer, vendor, employment, and commercial disputes
• Tender litigated matters to carriers and pursue defense cost recovery
• Control outside spend by selecting firms, scoping engagements, setting billing standards, and managing total legal spend against targets
• Review and negotiate commercial agreements, dealer and vendor contracts, and real estate transactions
• Support acquisitions and corporate transactions alongside leadership and outside deal counsel
• Advise HR on employment law, investigations, policy, ADA, FMLA, EEOC, and wage and hour questions
• Manage corporate governance, entity management, licensing, and regulatory compliance

Requirements

• JD from an accredited law school and an active bar license
• Florida admission, or readiness to obtain Florida authorization promptly
• Significant commercial litigation and dispute resolution experience
• A record of negotiating settlements and complex business matters
• Working knowledge of employment law and HR compliance
• Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets
• Comfort operating solo as the company’s only attorney, with a paralegal for support

Nice to have:

• Experience with multi-location retail, auto or RV dealerships, consumer protection claims, or F&I compliance
• Experience within a family-owned business
