Freelance Functional Analyst – Real-Time Operations
We are looking for an experienced Functional Analyst to join a Real-Time Operations team within a large organisation in the transport and mobility sector.
The team is working on an Incident Management Programme aimed at improving real-time incident handling, communication, information centralisation and workflow management.
🔴 MUST-HAVES
- 3+ years of professional Functional Analysis experience within the last 8 years.
- Strong experience producing:
- Functional specifications
- User stories
- Acceptance criteria
- Business rules
- System behaviour
- Error / exception handling
- Proven experience with system integrations , including REST, SOAP, messaging and/or event-based interfaces.
- Experience with JSON/XML payloads and integration error handling.
- Independent SQL skills : SELECT, JOIN, filtering and aggregation.
- Experience investigating data, validating business rules and/or analysing defects using SQL.
- English: C1+ spoken and written.
- Dutch OR French: B2+ spoken.
- Minimum 2 days/week on-site.
- Experience working in a setup where Functional Analysis is separate from Business Analysis .
YOUR ROLE
You will translate business and user requirements into detailed specifications that development teams can build and testers can verify.
Your responsibilities include:
- Challenging requirements for completeness, consistency and feasibility.
- Defining functional behaviour, business rules, acceptance criteria and edge cases.
- Specifying APIs, interfaces, data flows and error scenarios.
- Working closely with Business Analysts, Architects, Developers and Testers.
- Supporting development, defect triage, test preparation and UAT.
- Using SQL to investigate data and clarify defects.
- Keeping functional documentation up to date throughout delivery.
⭐ NICE-TO-HAVE
- BPMN, UML, use cases or equivalent.
- JIRA & Confluence.
- OpenAPI / Swagger.
- Conceptual & logical data modelling.
- Entity-relationship analysis / data dictionaries.
- Experience defining latency, throughput and availability requirements.
- Experience with real-time, transport, mobility or incident management systems.
- Agile / iterative delivery experience.
🌍 LANGUAGES
- English: C1+ – spoken & written
- Dutch OR French: B2+ – spoken
Dutch or French is required for workshops, defect reviews and day-to-day interaction with business and technical stakeholders.

- Minimum 2 days/week on-site
- Additional on-site presence may be required for workshops, incidents or releases.
Important: This is a hands-on Functional Analyst role , not a pure Business Analyst position.
