Duties
As a Firefighter (Basic Life Support/HAZMAT), you will serve as a Firefighter Driver/Operator/Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support, assigned to a crew engaged in structural firefighting, rescue, Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) incident response functions. Drives and operate firefighting/rescue vehicles, participate in rescue operations to include confined space, high-angle, and other special operations and perform noninvasive emergency medical procedures to provide Basic Life Support (BLS). Drive to the scene of the fire following a predetermined route or selecting an alternate when necessary and positions vehicle considering factors, such as wind direction, sources of water, hazards from falling structures, location of known explosive or hazardous materials, etc. Operate pumps, foam generators, boom and ground sweep nozzles, and other similar equipment. Perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multistoried buildings, research/development and related industrial areas, and storage facilities. Perform structural firefighting duties at facilities which may be engaged in the production, storage, and testing of fuels, gases, or other chemicals and materials which are capable of producing hazardous toxicological, biological, or radiological products. As a crewmember, participate in controlling and extinguishing fires by operating hoses, ladders, and hydrants. Employ hazard and risk assessment techniques to complete incident analysis to include incident surveys to identify materials and containers involved, predicts likely behavior of a material and/or container and estimating the size of the endangered area. Initiate established medical protocols in providing basic life support. Perform noninvasive emergency procedures: conduct initial and on-going patient assessment and physical examination; maintain airway, breathing, and circulation; determines priority of care; monitor patient's baseline vital signs and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillation (AED).

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
GS-7 Experience: Specialized experience is defined as: one year of experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service providing Firefighting functions; controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; high angle and confined space rescue operations; detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; operation of fire communications equipment; controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention; drive and operate firefighting apparatus at an emergency scene; position apparatus for an effective attack as directed by supervisor, and provide firefighting agent to personnel on scene.

- Skill in Technical Rescue
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

Certification Requirements
GS-7: Must possess and maintain DoD, ProBoard, or IFSAC certifications in: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazmat Awareness, Operations, and Technician, Driver/ Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator Aerial, State of Michigan EMT and/or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (BASIC) certification. NOTE: Must submit a copy of certifications with application packet.
