About This Role
This firefighting role involves performing structural firefighting duties, rescue operations, and first aid measures, while also conducting planning and preventive maintenance. The position requires compliance with health, safety, and environmental procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural firefighting duties covering buildings, shops, warehouses, fuel and explosive storage areas, piers, and a variety of other structures and facilities
- Perform rescue of personnel and a variety of first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare victims for transport to medical facilities
- Perform firefighting planning by physically going through structures to remain current on layouts, fire hazards, and locations of fixed fire protection systems
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and housekeeping duties associated with assigned facilities
- Comply with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and perform work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment
Requirements
- At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-3 level, gained while assigned to a crew engaging in structural firefighting and rescue operations, assisting in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards
- Certified as a Firefighter II (includes Firefighter I)
- HAZMAT Awareness certification
- HAZMAT Operations certification
- Emergency Responder (EMR) certification or higher
- CPR/AED certification
- Knowledge of basic firefighting equipment (fire alarm systems operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures
- Knowledge of basic building design, construction, and occupancy
- Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders
- Skill in operating communications equipment
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
- Transcripts required if qualifying based on education
- Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
- Proof of foreign education credentials deemed equivalent to U.S. education programs
