FIRE PROTECTION SPECIALIST

Duties

As a Fire Protection Specialist, GS-0081-09, you will perform as consultant to the Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention and single point of contact and technical authority relating to the fire protection of all base construction programs. You will also: 
-Provide Fire Protection engineering and Fire Prevention review and coordination. 
-Determine need for fire suppression, detection systems, and fire reporting systems for existing and new facilities. 
-Provide expert fire protection and fire prevention consultation, advice and guidance to Air Force Material Command (AFMC), Ogden Air Logistics Center (ALC), Contracting Directorate (ALC/PK), 75th Air Base Wing, 75th Civil Engineer, and all tenant units and organizations located at Hill AFB.
-Provide technical advice to the fire chief regarding the effect of both immediate and long term planning programs related to fire protection engineering. 

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have one (1) year of specialized experience (52 weeks of full time experience) at a level close to the work of this position that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform.Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-08), pay band or equivalent. Specialized experience is described as experience that demonstrated the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Such duties may include (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection , reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

Federal Time-In-Grade (TIG) Requirement for General Schedule (GS) Positions: Applicants must have served at least 52 weeks at the GS-08 or higher grade (or equivalent in an alternate pay system) within the Federal Civil Service to be considered for referral. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Ability to research, interpret, and develop accurate technical guidance using recognized standards governing fire protection and prevention techniques and procedures; agency and installation manuals, rules, and regulations; federal, state, and local fire protection/prevention ordinances, building and fire codes. 
2. Ability to interpret design drawings and specifications to determine life safety requirements and fire protection system requirements and develop appropriate recommendations to ensure compliance with applicable standards. 
3. Knowledge of fire suppression systems, fire detection systems and fire reporting systems. 
4. Ability to author clear, concise and appropriate technical reports and correspondence using a word processor, email, or other electronic media; ability to orally communicate complex technical information to commanders and customers and provide prepared briefings to commanders and customers; ability to maintain database records and provide reports, as requested, to Air Force, MAJCOM, and Installation commanders. 
5. Knowledge of the theory of fire propagation and progression and the application of accepted techniques and principles to reduce/eliminate hazards. 
   PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid work on the same basis as for paid experience. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. To receive credit for such experience you must indicate clearly the nature of the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the number of hours per week spent in such employment.
   VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE:  Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE: Title 5 U.S.C. 3307 authorizes the head of any agency to establish a maximum entry age for the original appointment of individuals to the position of primary and rigorous firefighter. The date immediately preceding an individual's 37th birthday is the maximum entry age for original appointment to a position as a Firefighter. This age restriction does not apply to those who have previously served in a Federal civilian fire fighting position covered by title 5 U.S.C. section 3307 provisions OR qualified veteran preference eligible covered by title 5 U.S.C. 3307.
