About the role
Where Experience Becomes Leadership.
Ready to take the next step in your fire service career? As a Fire Captain with CAL FIRE, you'll lead highly trained engine companies and hand crews during some of California's most challenging emergencies while mentoring the next generation of firefighters. From wildland and structure fires to rescues, hazardous materials incidents, flood response, and public education, you'll provide leadership both on the emergency scene and in the fire station. This role offers the opportunity to shape teams, strengthen communities, and make a lasting impact through service, training, and operational excellence.
Fire Captains do more than lead emergency responses, they develop people, build high-performing teams, and create a culture of safety, accountability, and professionalism. Whether directing operations on the fireline, coaching firefighters through daily training, engaging with the community, or managing station operations, Fire Captains set the standard for leadership and play a critical role in CAL FIRE's mission to protect lives, property, and natural resources.
Why CAL FIRE?
CAL FIRE is one of the nation's largest and most respected all-hazard emergency response organizations, providing Fire Captains with opportunities to lead in diverse environments across California. From wildland fires and complex incidents to community risk reduction and emergency preparedness, you'll work alongside dedicated professionals committed to operational excellence, innovation, and public service while helping shape the future of California's fire service.
Fire Captains play a pivotal role in developing future leaders, fostering teamwork, promoting safety, and ensuring every member of the crew is prepared to meet the challenges of an ever-changing emergency response environment. Your leadership will influence not only today's incident outcomes but also the future of CAL FIRE.
