About This Role

The Financial Counselor schedules appointments with patients and guarantors to discuss financial tools, insurance applications, and financial assistance. This role involves processing applications for Medicaid, Vermont Health Connect Insurance plans, and financial assistance, requiring an understanding of patient account balances, insurance coverage, and liabilities.

Responsibilities

• Schedule appointments with patients/guarantors to discuss financial tools, insurance application processes, and financial application processes
• Process applications for Medicaid, Vermont Health Connect Insurance plans (The Market Place ACA plans), and financial assistance
• Demonstrate understanding of patient account balances, insurance coverage, patient liabilities, and financial assistance
• Effectively utilize Hospital information systems, Microsoft Office applications, and other software tools necessary to perform assigned duties

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Must complete online coursework and examination to obtain Certified Vermont Assister certification within 30 days of hire and maintain certification as required
• Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills
• Patient advocacy skills
• Demonstrates empathy, professionalism, and respect when assisting patients and families with financial and insurance-related matters
• Self-motivated and functions independently
• Demonstrates problem-solving and problem-prevention skills
• Maintains strict confidentiality and HIPAA compliance

Nice to have:

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Human Services, Social Services, or related field
• Two (2) years’ customer service experience working with diverse demographics, including patients in crisis
• Two (2) years’ healthcare billing, insurance, patient access, registration, financial counseling, or related healthcare experience
• Two (2) years’ experience with Microsoft Office Suite
