Family Resource Specialist

Duties

This position is part of a Work-Life staff, whose main function is providing family support services for all units located in the area of responsibility.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

• Serving as a non-clinical case manager on issues pertaining to special needs conditions and Special Needs Programs (SNP) to Active Duty members; obtaining completed designated forms from members and processing for enrollment, dis-enrollment or update of status; and ensuring program compliance with all relevant policies and procedures.
• Coordinating and providing ongoing standardized education and training pertaining to the SNP.
• Providing information, referral, guidance, and support to Coast Guard personnel with adoption needs in accordance with guidelines.
• Providing information and referral to local childcare programs, to include, but not limited to, licensed home-based care, center-based care, Head-Start Programs, DoD childcare programs and GSA programs.
• Providing educational support information, referral, and guidance to maximize the opportunity for academic success of military associated children.
• Providing information, referral, guidance and support to Coast Guard personnel and family members affected by a Mobilization and Deployment Operation.
• Providing accurate information and referrals on available Work-Life and Childcare programs.
• Participating in educational forums and briefings to enhance community capacity and thus assist the AOR in improving work/life skills and knowledge of available resources.
• Assist with Ombudsman program coordination and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

OR Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, at the GS-11 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: Serving as a non-clinical case manager on issues pertaining to special needs conditions; assessing and providing referral recommendations for services necessary to address the individual needs of each family with a special needs member; providing information and referral to local childcare programs; assisting parents with locating points of contact in the schools and making referrals as appropriate; providing information, referral, guidance and support to agency personnel and family members; and improving community awareness of current and future programs and services.

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree

OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

OR Combination of education and experience.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

This position does have a positive education requirement. If you are including education on your resume, report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
