Emergency Services Dispatcher

About This Role

Dispatching ambulance requests from within Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Boston to the appropriate ambulance service is the core of this role. The dispatcher ensures efficient response, safe transport of patients, and accurate documentation of services, coordinating with various teams and utilizing communication systems.

Responsibilities

• Answer the phone with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center greeting and dispatch ambulance services, prioritizing needs of the requesting department
• Answer the phone line using proper, professional radio etiquette and direct calls appropriately
• Dispatch requests for Advanced Life Support/Basic Life Support and immediately dispatch available ALS/BLS units
• Enter and track appropriate information in the computer system, logging each call on daily log/Autocad system immediately after received from computer
• Utilize GPS system to locate and dispatch closest and most appropriate ambulance
• Receive incoming ambulance requests and prioritize calls from services/floor and assign to appropriate ambulance service
• Clarify instructions and coordinate services with requester
• Ensure all Beth Israel Deaconess ambulances on duty and all vehicles subcontracted the hospital have appropriate assignments
• Schedule transport of patients in a timely manner
• Notify departments of patient departure times
• Report issues, problems, etc., to supervisor/manager as needed
• Assist in obtaining coverage for sick calls in the absence of supervisor/manager
• Attend mandatory in-services as required by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
• Be courteous and professional at all times

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED required
• 0-1 years related work experience required
• Previous hospital telecommunications experience
• Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access

Nice to have:

• Emergency Medical Services experience
• Geographical knowledge of surrounding area
• GPS locator software
• Knowledge of Emergency Medical Dispatch and Ambulance Communications

Important Details

• Schedule: Constant sitting, keyboard use, and endurance for up to 3-4 hours without a break
