Electrician

Duties

Serve as a journeyman electrician assigned to the Facilities Management branch of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Duties include, but may not be limited to, the following:

* Install, repair, modify and maintain electrical systems and equipment;

* Lay out work, determine requirements, draw materials and carry out assignments to completion utilizing established trade techniques while adhering to safety requirements and national and local electrical codes;

* Follow verbal instructions, blueprints and circuit diagrams; install, connect and test circuit components which include installing conduits and wiring; connecting outlet boxes and panels, switches, socket and fixtures; installing circuit breakers, fuses and plugs and insulating wiring;

* Test entire systems for proper operation utilizing electrical test equipment such as test lamps, ammeters, voltage meters, ohmmeters, megger test equipment, recording meters and phase rotation meters;

* Submit recommendations for modifications to existing equipment and systems to improve overall safety and operation;

* Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Make installations from ladders, scaffolds and platforms where frequently parts of the systems are in cramped places such as attics, crawl spaces and ventilation shafts. This requires standing, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions. Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally over this amount. May be exposed to electrical shock, sparks and arc hazards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work outside in all types of weather. Also work indoors in dusty, dirty and occasionally greasy locations where there is a possibility of cuts and bruises.

AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a treasure of visual, geological and biological surprises --- a high mountain valley holding the tallest dunes in North America and flanked by some of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains; unique wind-powered geologic systems; insects physically adapted to life in the sand and found nowhere else; alpine lakes and tundra; disappearing creeks; interdunal wetlands and much more!

Nestled in southern Colorado, North America's tallest dunes rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This geologic wonderland, containing over 30 square miles of massive dunes, became a national monument in 1932. With the passage of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve Act, resources now also include alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000 feet in elevation, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands and wetlands --- all habitat for diverse wildlife and plant species. The city of Alamosa, Colorado, is 35 miles from the park and offers a full range of shopping, medical facilities and other amenities.

Government (park) housing may be available.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Tuesday, June 06, 2017. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.
QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.

Applicants must be physically fit and must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying.

A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Examples of experience for this position include: perform as a JOURNEYMAN-level electrician by independently performing preventive maintenance, operational checks, repair, layout, troubleshooting, tracing, locating defects, modification to new and existing electrical systems and electrical components. This experience includes assignments to install, modify, recognize faulty equipment and make extensive repairs on a variety of equipment operating systems.

You must meet level 2 on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements in the occupational assessment questionnaire.
