Education Services Specialist

Duties

You will serve as the Education Services Officer (ESO) responsible for administering and advising on all aspects of the Coast Guard's nonresident training, correspondence courses, voluntary education programs, college video/audio courses, and Service wide Examinations.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include:

• Providing educational and vocational advisory services.
• Interviewing and compiling personal and academic histories; reviewing secondary and post-secondary educational transcripts and academic aptitude test results.
• Assisting with the establishment of realistic educational vocational goals.
• Interpreting degree plans based on the criteria available from academic institutions and the CG Institute.
• Providing information on financial assistance for education.
• Serving as DANTES testing control officer with the responsibility for procurement, issue, control, use, inspection, disposition and security of all test items.
• Advising and guiding members on education programs relevant to advancement.
• Coordinating officer candidate boards.
• Administering the Service Wide Exams.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Degree that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours appropriate to the position to be filled in one or a combination of the areas described below. At least one course must have been from (1) or (2) below:

(1) Tests and measurement; (2) Adult education; (3) Education program administration; (4) Curriculum development or design; (5) Teaching methods; (6) Guidance and counseling; (7) Career planning; (8) Occupational information.

Additional Requirements for GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level is required.

2 years of progressively high level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

OR;
Education and experience may be combined to meet experience requirements.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. Examples of specialized experience include: Experience involving administering, supervising, promoting, conducting, or evaluating programs and activities designed to provide individualized career-related or self-development education plans. The work requires a professional knowledge of education theories, principles, procedures, and practices of secondary, adult, or continuing education.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
