Duties

As a Economist you will:

  • Assume technical responsibility for various phases of initiation, formulation, planning, and execution of major projects.
  • Assist in determining the objectives of research projects and the methodology to be used.
  • Develop specifications for research studies by presenting analytical material.
  • Perform research to locate new sources of data, analyze pertinent information and draw conclusions.
  • Play an essential role in error resolution of more complex statistical studies.
  • Assume responsibility for the effective use of resources within assigned subject matter projects.
  • Produce tables and graphical materials using standard computer software packages.
  • Keep abreast of economic, statistical and tax literature for data and research methodology.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Four (4)-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus. OR
A combination of education and experience. The education must include courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. To be qualifying your experience may have included the following or must be sufficient demonstrate the ability to perform the following:

  • Individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation.
  • Supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information. OR
  • Teach assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following; (1) personal research that produced evidence of results; (2) direction of graduate theses in economics; or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.

GS- 13 LEVEL: In addition to the basic requirements you must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: Demonstrated comprehensive professional knowledge of, and/or skill in applying: Methods and principles of economics and to research projects and programs; Developing, analyzing, and presenting statistical information, recognizing and adopting new techniques to fit the needs of research projects and preparing comprehensive reports. To be qualifying, your experience must be sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform a variety of independent assignments covering a diverse number of topics on a research project or program where economic and statistical methodology were used to define, profile and evaluate market segments of taxpayers; Knowledge of user-oriented computer programming languages and statistical software packages; and skill in carrying out special assignments which need extreme precision in carrying out program assignments and resolving critical problems.

-The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-timework; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.
