Drone/UAV Test Pilot (Fixed-Wing VTOL - Hardware and Software)

About This Role

This role is for a drone pilot to conduct flight testing and operations for fixed-wing VTOL UAVs, ensuring compliance with design specifications and safety protocols. It involves extensive travel for internal trials and training for defense forces, both nationally and internationally.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre-flight inspections and system diagnostics for fixed-wing VTOL UAVs
• Execute test flights, evaluate performance, and ensure compliance with design specifications and safety protocols
• Develop and follow detailed test plans, ensuring thorough documentation of results
• Test and validate both hardware and software systems, including autopilot and navigation systems
• Record flight performance data and identify potential design flaws or operational issues
• Collaborate with engineering teams to analyze test results and propose system improvements
• Provide detailed feedback on UAV performance, including stability, endurance, payload handling, and control systems
• Assist in integrating software and hardware subsystems, including sensors, payloads, and communication modules
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software issues encountered during operations
• Provide input for refining flight control systems and VTOL transition mechanisms
• Ensure all flight operations comply with local aviation regulations, company policies, and safety standards
• Maintain meticulous records of all tests for regulatory and internal auditing purposes
• Conduct risk assessments and suggest measures to mitigate operational hazards
• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, software, and hardware engineers, to achieve project milestones
• Train team members and clients on UAV operation, maintenance, and best practices

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechatronics/electronics engineering, or a related field
• Valid UAV pilot certification (e.g., FAA Part 107, DGCA RPTO, or equivalent, based on jurisdiction)
• Diploma in Aircraft maintenance
• Minimum 3+ years of flying experience operating fixed-wing or VTOL UAVs in test environments
• RC Aeromodel flying experience (engine)
• Hands-on experience with flight testing, debugging, and improving hardware/software systems
• Familiarity with autopilot systems (e.g., Pixhawk, Ardupilot, or proprietary systems) and UAV ground control stations
• Proficiency in UAV software tools, including mission planning and telemetry analysis
• Strong understanding of flight mechanics, aerodynamics, and VTOL systems
• Experience with integrating payloads such as LiDAR, cameras, or other sensors
