About This Role
Working alongside field crews and project managers, the Drafter takes raw survey data and transforms it into polished deliverables. This detail-oriented office role suits someone who enjoys solving spatial puzzles, getting the linework right, and producing drawings that hold up to a surveyor's stamp.
Responsibilities
- Process field data and draft boundary surveys, ALTA/NSPS surveys, topographic maps, subdivision plats, and construction-staking drawings
- Work primarily in Carlson Survey with IntelliCAD; produce drawings to Weygand's drafting standards
- Reduce raw GNSS and total-station data, build coordinate geometry, and resolve closure and accuracy checks
- Interpret deeds, plats, easements, recorded documents, and field notes to support boundary determinations
- Coordinate with project managers and crew chiefs to clarify field information and flag issues early
- Maintain organized project files, layers, and templates so work is consistent across the team
- Help refine drafting standards, blocks, and Carlson templates as the firm grows
Requirements
- Drafting experience required — production CAD work on real-world drawings, not just coursework
- Proficient in CAD; Carlson Survey with IntelliCAD experience is a strong plus (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or MicroStation background also welcome — we'll bridge you to Carlson)
- Experience in land surveying preferred but not required — drafters from civil engineering, site design, or similar fields are encouraged to apply
- Comfortable reducing field data, working with coordinate geometry, and reading deeds/plats/legal descriptions
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple active drawings without dropping the ball
- Clear written communicator — your drawings, layer names, and file notes need to be readable by the next person on the project
- Associate's or technical degree in surveying, drafting, civil engineering, or related field is a plus, not required
Benefits
- Collaborative, team-focused environment with leadership that's been in the field and at the keyboard themselves
- Modern CAD setup running Carlson Survey with IntelliCAD; we invest in the tools that make good drafters faster
- Wide variety of work: residential boundaries one week, large ALTA or subdivision plats the next
- Full benefits, paid time off, and a clear path to advancement
- Real investment in your professional development, including cross-training with field crews if you ever want to spend time outside the office
