About the role

Duties

·        Repairs a variety of industrial equipment such as manual operated doors and power operated overhead doors, hanger doors, automatic fire doors, explosion proof bunker doors, and industrial hoist and cranes.

·        Troubleshoots to determine the extent of damage and determines material and/or part required for repair.

·        Repairs mechanical portions of electric motors relating to equipment being repaired or serviced.

·        Manufactures, repairs, and rebuilds parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals and metal alloy through the use of conventional machine tools and precision hand tools.

·        Utilizes established safety practices, rules, regulations, and procedures to maintain a safe and clean work environment.

·        Operates government vehicles and heavy equipment in performance of assigned duties.

Qualifications

WAGE GRADE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  The following summarizes the qualification standard for this position found in the Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations (Handbook X-118C) http://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/federal-wage-system-qualifications/#url=Overview.  To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate enough experience in your application to show you possess sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain a variety of industrial equipment such as manual and power operated doors and use various machine tools and attachments, power tools, and a variety of test equipment.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Ability to do the work of a Door Systems Mechanic without more than normal supervision. (screen out element)

  2. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and maintenance for various types of industrial equipment such as hanger and overhead doors, electrical motors, and lifting devices, etc.

  3. Ability to apply technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) associated with the Door Systems Mechanic trade to include principles of electricity, safety regulations, practices, and procedures, and machining operations on most type of conventional machine tools and their various attachments.

  4. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc (Includes blueprint reading) associated with the Door Systems Mechanic trade.

  5. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment such as hand tools, power tools, a variety of test equipment, precise measuring devices and a variety of shop equipment such as lathes, drill presses, punches, hydraulic presses, mills, and welding equipment.

  6. Knowledge of materials and ability to fabricate parts by cutting and shaping.

  7. Ability to trouble shoot complex problems on large projects applying prescribed test procedures and equipment.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE**:** Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.  You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE:  Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
