About the role

Duties
The selectee will serve as a Document Analyst in the Office of Investigations, Criminal Investigative Division. Typical work assignments include:

  • Training personnel and other officials in an academic and/or professional setting and preparing detailed administrative, laboratory and statistical reports of the examinations performed and testifying as an expert witness in Federal, state, local, international and military courts and hearings, while under rigorous and direct cross examination.
  • Explaining printing processes, their history and evolution and the steps necessary to properly analyze counterfeit currency and methods of production; and identifying security features in order to classify notes by applying a variety of techniques.
  • Performing analyses using wet chemistry or instrumentation to examine features of printing processes, paper chemistry and document security features.
  • Using chain of custody and other quality assurance measures to ensure integrity of evidence for use in courts of law.

Qualifications
You qualify for the GS-12 level if you possess one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level performing duties such as determining the validity of counterfeit documents received; examining, processing, and classifying counterfeit documents by determining the type of counterfeit technology used; establishing, tracking and maintaining evidence; indexing and entering counterfeit information into various law enforcement databases; developing, retrieving and compiling forensic reports using a variety of databases; utilizing scientific equipment in a laboratory environment to examine and analyze ink, paper, and security features incorporated into documents; testifying in courts of law as a witness; completing and reviewing scientific reports, and writing policies and procedures; and performing all duties while keeping the supervisor informed of progress.

You qualify for the GS-13 level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level performing duties such as determining the validity of counterfeit documents received; examining, processing, and classifying counterfeit documents by determining the type of counterfeit technology used; establishing, tracking and maintaining evidence; indexing and entering counterfeit information into various law enforcement databases; developing, retrieving and compiling complex forensic reports using a variety of databases; utilizing scientific equipment in a laboratory environment to examine and analyze ink, paper, and security features incorporated into documents; testifying in courts of law as an expert witness; completing and reviewing scientific reports, and writing policies and procedures; and performing all duties independently.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
