About the role

Our retail client is seeking a high-impact Director of Performance Media to lead performance media strategy and execution across paid digital channels. This role will support customer acquisition, member engagement, retention, and e-commerce growth objectives through effective media planning, activation, measurement, and optimization. The Director will oversee media across paid search, paid social, YouTube, programmatic display, mobile marketing, and emerging digital channels. This leader will also oversee mobile push capabilities, ensuring that paid and owned digital channels work together to deliver measurable business outcomes.

The ideal candidate is a data-driven, growth-oriented leader with deep digital media expertise and demonstrated experience managing significant media budgets ($40M+), agency partners, platform relationships, and high-performing teams. This position requires strong cross-functional collaboration with Integrated Marketing, Membership, E-commerce, Product, Analytics, Creative, Merchandising, Technology, and external agency partners.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the organization at a time of growth and help shape the strategic direction of their media efforts in direct partnership with senior executives. This is a a full-time, direct hire position, that will be hybrid onsite Tues-Thurs at their office in Marlborough, MA.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Leadership

-Develop and lead the digital performance media strategy in support of established revenue, margin, e-commerce, customer acquisition, member engagement, and retention goals.

-Provide strategic recommendations on media investment, audience strategy, channel mix, campaign sequencing, and optimization opportunities.

-Translate enterprise and marketing priorities into actionable annual and mid-term media strategies, investment plans, channel roadmaps, and test-and-learn agendas.

-Lead the execution and ongoing optimization of  digital marketing programs, ensuring alignment with the broader marketing and customer strategy.

-Partner with Integrated Marketing, Membership Marketing and other cross-functional leaders to develop cohesive, full-funnel campaigns across paid, and owned touchpoints.

-Establish effective operating practices, governance, and performance standards across internal teams, agencies, and external partners.

-Communicate strategies, results, insights, risks, and investment recommendations to senior marketing and business leaders.

Paid Digital Media

-Lead media planning, buying, activation, testing, and optimization across Google, Meta, YouTube, programmatic platforms, and other existing and emerging digital channels.

-Oversee significant media budgets and ensure investments are allocated effectively against business priorities, target audiences, and expected outcomes.

-Identify opportunities to expand media capabilities through new platforms, audience strategies, creative formats, partnerships, and emerging technologies.

-Partner with Creative and Integrated Marketing teams to develop channel-appropriate creative strategies and improve creative performance.

-Ensure campaigns follow appropriate brand, privacy, data-use, platform, and operational requirements.

Mobile Marketing

-Oversee the mobile push strategy, roadmap, governance, and team, using the channel to strengthen member engagement, loyalty, and incremental sales.

-Establish audience, frequency, prioritization, and testing frameworks that balance business performance with the member experience.

Measurement and Optimization

-Partner with Analytics to define success metrics and evaluate performance using measures such as ROAS, incremental ROAS, customer acquisition cost, conversion, engagement, revenue, sales lift, and lifetime value.

-Build a disciplined testing and optimization agenda across audiences, channels, creative, offers, landing experiences, and investment levels.

-Translate complex performance data into clear insights, actions, and investment recommendations for marketing and executive stakeholders.

Team Leadership and Partner Management

-Establish clear goals, responsibilities, development plans, and performance expectations aligned with organizational priorities.

-Build an effective performance media organization with the capabilities, processes, and talent required to support future growth.

-Lead relationships with agencies, technology providers, publishers, and platform representatives to maximize performance, innovation, service quality, and commercial value.

-Hold internal teams and external partners accountable for strategic quality, executional excellence, financial stewardship, and measurable results.

-Promote seamless collaboration across Integrated Marketing, Membership, E-commerce, Creative, Analytics, Product, Technology, and Merchandising.

Qualifications

Required

-Experience managing significant media budgets ($40M+) and making investment decisions across multiple channels and business objectives.

-Minimum of 15 years of experience in digital marketing, media, or a related discipline, including at least five years in a leadership role overseeing paid media, performance marketing and related digital capabilities.

-Retailer and Agency experience

-Demonstrated ability to lead through ambiguity, manage competing priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.

-Deep expertise across paid search, paid social, online video, programmatic display, audience strategy, media planning, optimization, and performance measurement.

-Proven ability to manage agencies, technology providers, publishers, and platform partners.

-Strong financial and analytical acumen, with the ability to translate data into clear business insights and actions.

-Excellent leadership, communication, collaboration, and executive stakeholder-management skills.

Preferred

-Experience in e-commerce, membership, or subscription-driven businesses.

-Experience connecting acquisition, e-commerce, engagement, and retention strategies across paid and owned channels.
