Director of Finance

About This Role

Directing the finance function for a large public sector organization, this role focuses on stabilizing and transforming Accounts Payable operations. It suits an experienced interim leader who can manage a high-volume finance function under pressure and drive significant change.

Responsibilities

• Drive backlog recovery: triage and clear aged, unactioned invoices to improve supplier relationships
• Support systems and automation: implement an inbox triage/ticketing solution and reduce manual workarounds within a large ERP environment
• Fix processes: address recurring 3-way match exceptions, manual PO-related workarounds, and an outdated staff reimbursement process
• Manage change: bring the team along on the journey, embedding new and sustainable ways of working
• Establish governance and reporting: track progress, risks, and benefits, and report to Finance leadership as the function transitions
• Build trust with an established team while driving operational improvement

Requirements

• Proven experience leading AP or transactional finance functions through backlog recovery, process redesign, or systems-enabled change, ideally within a shared services environment
• Financial Controller background with direct AP leadership experience, or a dedicated transformation/project management professional with strong AP domain knowledge
• Comfortable working hands-on with ERP systems
• Strong stakeholder and change management skills, able to bring a settled team through meaningful change
• Immediately available or on short notice for a 4-6 month engagement

• Team: circa 4 FTE AP team (no direct reports)
• Contract: 4-6 month engagement
