Director of Accounting

About This Role

Leading the accounting and financial reporting functions for a mission-oriented nonprofit organization is the core of this role. This individual will ensure financial integrity, strengthen internal controls, support strategic initiatives, and provide executive leadership with meaningful financial insights to guide decision-making. Responsibilities

• Direct all aspects of the accounting function, including month-end close, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and general ledger management
• Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records while maintaining compliance with applicable accounting standards
• Oversee day-to-day accounting activities related to payables, receivables, payroll, fixed assets, and cash transactions
• Maintain a scalable accounting infrastructure capable of supporting organizational growth
• Provide leadership with meaningful financial insights, trends, and recommendations to support operational and strategic initiatives
• Assist in long-range planning efforts through forecasting, cash flow modeling, and financial analysis
• Evaluate financial performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, profitability, and resource allocation
• Partner with department leaders to support planning, budgeting, and financial decision-making
• Maintain a strong internal control environment designed to safeguard organizational assets and improve financial accountability
• Coordinate annual audits and serve as a primary liaison with external accounting partners
• Oversee regulatory reporting requirements and ensure adherence to financial policies and procedures
• Monitor compliance with funding, reporting, and operational requirements as applicable
• Manage, mentor, and develop members of the accounting team
• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous professional growth
• Establish priorities, improve workflows, and create efficiencies across the department
• Serve as a trusted business partner to executive leadership and key stakeholders

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline
• Progressive accounting leadership experience with responsibility for financial reporting and team management
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial statement preparation
• Experience overseeing audits, budgeting processes, and internal controls
• Ability to communicate complex financial information to diverse audiences
• Advanced proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel
