About This Role

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) play a vital role in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). DSPs work closely with people of all ages, providing assistance in various settings, including homes and community environments. This position suits individuals who are passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of others and who enjoy fostering inclusive communities.

Responsibilities

• Assist individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities while upholding their personal rights.
• Support people to meet personal goals that enhance quality of life and encourage socializing and community connections.
• Supervise, protect, and care for individuals while adhering to program guidelines.
• Ensure health, wellness, and safety by providing appropriate supervision and managing crisis situations.
• Implement individualized service and behavior support plans, demonstrating the OPWDD Core Competencies.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment.
• Assist with personal care and activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, and toileting.
• Ensure medication is administered as prescribed.
• Develop skills and support person-centered advocacy.
• Facilitate ethical decision-making and assist individuals with communication and self-expression.
• Plan and prepare balanced meals, considering dietary restrictions.
• Transport and escort individuals to various activities and appointments.
• Collect, record, and summarize data on individuals’ observable behavior.
• Participate in team meetings and maintain effective communication with team members.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to meet physical demands, including frequent walking, standing, and assisting individuals of varying weights.
• Effective written and oral communication skills.
• Enthusiasm for working with individuals with I/DD and a willingness to take initiative.
• Basic computer skills, including email and related systems.
• Must hold or obtain and maintain SCIP-R certification within one year.
• Ability to maintain professional relationships aligned with YAI’s mission.
• Valid Driver’s License and Van certification if required for the position.

Nice to have:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in the I/DD field.
