Position Overview: The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Chief) has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance for all Diagnostic Imaging modalities. Major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Implements administrative and operational policies and procedures as formulated in conjunction with AO and Chief of Service.
  • Develops administrative and operational plans to meet challenges, deadlines, priorities, and increased productivity to improve the flow of work in Diagnostic Imaging Service (DIS) based on analysis of such factors as manpower, equipment utilized, workload, available examination of facilities, and personnel required for various examinations which require controls and record and coordination with other professional services.
  • Establishes Equipment/Space/HR Policy for the unique and/or complex organization, including all the imaging modalities and sections within the organization.
  • Responsible for personnel operations including position classification, grievance procedures, performance standards and disciplinary actions.
  • Administers internal review, quality, and productivity initiatives, and establishes unique or complex quality and productivity programs.
  • Serves as facility advisor and co-student coordinator to Radiology & Ultrasound student programs.
  • Responsible for all administrative duties pertinent to DIS and two Medical Centers regarding: ensuring continuous quality improvement, preparing DIS for joint commission, and serving as Systematic External Review Program (SERP) and Major Facility Improvement Plan (MFIP) committee member.
  • Develops training criteria and supports ongoing training processes and in-services for all staff.
  • Plans and facilitates regular section meetings with Management/Supervisors/Lead and staff.
  • Tracks and analyzes information for policy and procedures within each modality.
  • Resolves complaints from customers and staff.
  • Conducts research for purchase of imaging equipment, ancillary equipment and supplies.
  • Performs and prepares annual performance rating, disciplinary actions, recommendation for awards, and merit promotion for lower grade personnel.
  • Participates in the interview, research and selection of new employees.
  • Serves as FCP approving official.
  • Develops and maintains awareness of available resources.
  • Serves as coordinator for imaging at GV & LC Medical Centers.
  • Must have advanced knowledge regarding all imaging modalities in DIS.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining lines of successions in DIS.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m - 4:30 p.m.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.

Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.

English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.

Grade Determinations: Supervisory DRT (Chief). Assignment to this grade level is restricted to those serving as the chief radiologic technologist at medical facilities with comprehensive and complex radiographic and imaging programs. Employees in these assignments plan and direct the radiologic technology program at active, affiliated medical centers or outpatient clinics, and have full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of nonsupervisory personnel, including GS-10 DRTs, at least 1 subordinate team leader or supervisor at the next lower grade level, and any clerical or administrative support staff. At this level, the radiologic technology program typically includes the full variety of specialties. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

*a. Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties, including responsibility for assignment of work performed; performance evaluations; recommendations for appointments, awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; and identification of continuing education and training needs;

b. Skill to serve as a consultant to other facility personnel in evaluating and planning radiologic technology services for the most complex cases;

*c. Ability to participate in research studies and/or as a consultant to others conducting research;

*d. Ability to consult with staff and resident physicians through patient presentation, attending ward rounds, and specialty clinics and/or conferences, etc.; and

*e. Skill to assess, plan, and evaluate the delivery of radiologic technology services at the facility.
