About The Role
The Data Scientist II at 2U will play a pivotal role in driving data-driven decision-making across edX.org, our online learning marketplace. This role involves partnering with Product, Marketing, and Finance teams to analyze behavioral data, generate insights, and support strategic initiatives. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting product analytics, designing and interpreting experiments, and developing models that inform business strategies. This position requires a proactive approach to handling ambiguous business problems, triaging stakeholder requests, and translating complex data into clear, actionable insights. The Data Scientist II will also contribute to building scalable dashboards, maintain data quality, and apply machine learning techniques to accelerate understanding and innovation within the platform. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence the future of online education through advanced analytics and collaborative problem-solving.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, economics, or a related quantitative field; graduate degree preferred
  • 3–5 years of professional experience in data science, product analytics, or similar roles
  • Strong proficiency in Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn) and advanced SQL skills on large datasets
  • Experience with data platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, or Spark
  • Hands-on experience with experimentation platforms like Statsig, Eppo, Optimizely, or LaunchDarkly
  • Familiarity with product analytics tools such as Amplitude, FullStory, or Mixpanel
  • Solid understanding of statistical hypothesis testing, power analysis, confidence intervals, and multiple comparisons
  • Experience designing and analyzing A/B tests, including quasi-experimental methods such as difference-in-differences, propensity scoring, and regression discontinuity
  • Ability to communicate complex findings effectively to non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong domain knowledge of online learning, EdTech, or consumer marketplace products is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Conduct product analytics and ad hoc analyses to support decision-making in areas such as funnels, cohorts, retention, and segmentation
  • Serve as the analytics partner for Product, Marketing, and Finance teams, prioritizing requests and matching responses to decision impact
  • Design, execute, and interpret A/B tests, utilizing quasi-experimental methods when randomization is not feasible
  • Define and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs), including north-star metrics, input metrics, and guardrails
  • Develop and maintain scalable dashboards and tooling to enable self-service analytics and reduce repetitive requests
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering to ensure data quality, contribute to dbt models, and perform exploratory data analysis on new datasets
  • Apply machine learning techniques such as classification, regression, and clustering to extract deeper insights
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of edX products, learners, and business objectives to inform analysis and stakeholder education
  • Coach teams on statistical concepts, refine ambiguous questions, and translate complex findings into clear recommendations
