About the role
Free Geek Twin Cities is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to digital inclusion, reuse, and responsible recycling. Free Geek Twin Cities is dedicated to reducing electronic waste by refurbishing and recycling technology, making technology accessible, and promoting digital literacy. Through our work, we divert thousands of pounds of e-waste from landfills each year (In 2025 - 100 tons recycled & connected 52,000 items+ with reuse homes), provide low-cost and free technology to those in need (1,300 free laptops distributed), and educate the community on the environmental impact of electronics waste. We serve individuals in greater North and South Minneapolis, including low-income households, seniors, adults with disabilities, and members of underserved racial and ethnic communities (especially Spanish and Somali). Many residents face persistent barriers to digital participation, including limited access to affordable devices, insufficient digital literacy skills, and lack of technical support needed to fully engage in education, employment, healthcare, and civic life. Many of the people we serve rely on second-hand technology, making technology reuse an essential part of environmental justice. Member Duties : The CTEP AmeriCorps member at Free Geek Twin Cities will support the following existing digital literacy training and capacity building education programs; laptop distribution, “Build Your Own Computer” and “Fix-It Clinics”. The member will also develop and deliver digital literacy training programs based on community needs, such as Building Cyber Scam Awareness for Seniors, Understanding Your Digital Footprint, Avoiding Location Tracking workshops. The member is also responsible for developing and distributing participant surveys, compiling and presenting data. The member may also be required to attend community outreach events and engage with the community regarding FGTC’s workshops and digital literacy programs.
