Crane Operator

About This Role

This role involves the safe operation of crane equipment on a MODU (Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit), hoisting materials and equipment to and from ocean vessels, and ensuring the safety of the Roustabout crew. The Crane Operator is responsible for training personnel, performing preventive maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and company management systems.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible for safety as well as that of the Roustabout crew
• Attend and participate in all pre-tour, post-tour, and weekly safety meetings
• Oversee and train personnel to inspect rig safety apparatus and equipment
• Demonstrate good leadership skills and direct Roustabouts in support of a safe and efficient operation
• Adhere to and follow lock-out, tag-out procedures
• Ensure lifted loads are clear of obstructions, within load limits of equipment, and properly secured with tag lines
• Ensure lifting gear is properly color coded prior to use
• Direct Roustabouts as necessary to support MODU operations
• Safely operate crane equipment to hoist materials and equipment onto the MODU and to and from ocean vessels
• Assist with inspection of all lifting equipment prior to use (slings, cables, straps, shackles, wire ropes), etc.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks on cranes and equipment
• Supervise the cleaning and painting of the MODU
• Ensure activities are conducted in compliance with Valaris safety
• Ensure Roustabouts are in compliance with Valaris Management System (VMS)
• Assist in corporate and regulatory body inspections
• Create an environment in which open communications concerning safety issues can occur at the appropriate levels in the organization for appropriate action and resolution
• Remain in continual voice (radio) communication with Roustabouts while operating the crane
• Maintain accurate and up to date Crane record books
• Ensure Roustabout crews are in compliance when tying onto loads to be hoisted or moved and proper lifting techniques are used when carrying load by hand
• Monitor sea and weather conditions ensuring loading and unloading operations are safe
• Complete thoroughly and timely assigned barrier integrity verification activities, as prescribed under VMS, for the assessment of associated deficiencies and, if applicable taking mitigating or corrective actions to the best of their competency, knowledge and ability
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Minimum of two (2) years as a certified Crane Operator Assistant
• Prior offshore experience preferred
• For rigs operated by BP, 3 years of experience
