Counselor Assistant

About This Role

Caring for clients in a correctional healthcare setting is the core of this role, which involves supervising therapeutic activities, monitoring client movement, and providing didactic sessions. This position suits an individual with experience in behavioral health who can interact appropriately with diverse client populations and contribute to a treatment team.

Responsibilities

• Supervise clients' therapeutic and recreational activities, monitor client break periods and movement, including intervening to control or channel inappropriate behaviors, and take census counts
• Report client observations, incidents, unusual occurrences, or missing clients to appropriate personnel and record improvement/progress
• Upon successful completion of required internal training, provide didactic sessions according to designated curricula within the program
• Present life skills classes to assist clients with basic education on these topics
• Guide and assist clients in complying with program/institutional rules and regulations
• Notify appropriate personnel of clients failing to comply with program/institutional policies and rules
• Maintain and update client records, including recording service hours, therapeutic treatments, activity or group participation, in accordance with contractual requirements
• Serve as a member of the treatment team providing input to treatment plans, conflict intervention processes or privileges
• Assist team in maintaining consistent setting for treatment
• Perform a variety of related office and technical duties as necessary such as answering telephones, relaying messages, responding to inquiries regarding program services and policies, filing, photocopying and scanning documents, assembling intake packets, and participating in client activities to promote socialization
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalency
• Two (2) years of prior experience in the behavioral health field
• General knowledge of the physical, cognitive and psychosocial functioning level of the client population
• Demonstrated ability to appropriately interact, tailor interventions, including de-escalation techniques, and communicate with clients based on their individual maturation level
• Good interpersonal and communication skills necessary to exchange information and interact with treatment team and referral sources, and provide clients with counseling support and motivation
