Counselor

About This Role

This Counselor role with Amity Foundation involves providing group and individual therapeutic sessions and related rehabilitative treatment services to substance abuse students in an outpatient setting. The position suits compassionate individuals with a desire to teach and learn within a therapeutic community, working with prison and re-entry programs.

Responsibilities

• Lead and participate in group, individual, and therapeutic processes under the supervision of a certified behavioral health professional
• Participate significantly with students in determining short and long-range goals and treatment plans
• Observe, record, and evaluate changes in appearance, behavior, and demeanor of the student
• Maintain accurate and timely student records of a sensitive nature
• Evaluate emergencies and take appropriate action
• Prepare reporting and documentation as required by Amity and contract compliance
• Protect students' health, safety, welfare, and confidentiality of student records
• Attend workshops, meetings, and training as requested by supervisor
• May serve as a Community Advocate role in addition to the job as requested by community leadership
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a behavioral health field and one year experience in a substance abuse or behavioral health treatment facility; OR High School diploma or equivalent G.E.D., and a combination of behavioral health education work experience totaling a minimum of two years; OR Knowledge of therapeutic community processes, methods, and design, including small-group dynamics
• Experience with the fundamentals of the Therapeutic Teaching Community
• Understand causes, symptoms, and effects of substance abuse
• Valid Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance card
• Current valid CPR and First Aid certification
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) & ESR (Emergency Service Response) certification
• Tuberculosis test from a health professional
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Electronic Medical Record, or similar software
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to maintain confidential information
• Ability to operate general office equipment
• Demonstrate an understanding of human emotions with a high level of empathy
• Ability to exercise an amount of empathy and understand the importance of role-reversal
• Demonstrate skill in patience, active listening, and interest in diverse life stories
• Good verbal and written communication skills with a genuine enthusiasm for helping people
