Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
This position serves a critical role in the overall operations of the Topeka Correctional Facility by providing immediate supervision to all levels of the resident population during a routine shift. This level of supervision includes resolving problems with residents and/or staff, responding to emergencies within the compound in a judicious, expedient manner and maintaining a safe living and working environment. This position serves as a first level supervisory position for the facility and as such is tasked with evaluating and documenting staff performance, addressing inappropriate behavior, training staff to perform at the highest level, and acting as a role model for all staff and residents.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

• Maintains order and supervision of residents housed at the Topeka Correctional Facility. Duties and responsibilities involve being assigned as officer in charge of a cell house, dormitory, or a living unit.
• Ensures that ordered, disciplined, secure, sanitary and safe conditions are established and maintained in resident living units, during meals, in classrooms, at work sites, in activity and program areas, in clinics, in kitchen and bathing areas and while they are segregated for any purpose.
• Supervises the daily activity schedules (wake-up call, work call, meal, sick call, yard, visitation, and programs).
• Work to improve antisocial attitudes in residents and provides a positive role model by demonstrating skillful communications, problem solving techniques, and other behaviors helpful upon reentry into society.
• Responds to emergency situations in accordance with the appropriate contingency plan.
• Advises, counsels and otherwise assists security personnel with occupational and/or personal problems, referring when necessary to the appropriate department for further assistance.
• Work to resolve grievances and/or provides information regarding the.
• This position is subject to regular rotation to any post and/or shift within the facility.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

• Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for CO I A
• Be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment
• Have two years of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders
• Have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP)
• At least 20 years of age at the time of appointment
• Free of felony conviction(s), free of any felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth in 18 U.S.C. § 922 (d) (9) and (g) (9)
• No DUI convictions within the last 24 months

Licenses and Certifications:
Incumbent must possess good overall physical & mental condition consistent with the unassisted ability to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, all statutorily defined activities, duties & tasks of a Corrections Officer/Specialist. These activities, duties and tasks are presumed to include the responsibilities as set out in Sections 19, 21, 24, 25, 26 and 27.

Pre-employment & Post-Offer Requirements:
Must have a Valid High School Diploma or Equivalent. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position. Must take and pass drug screen, background check, and Tuberculosis (TB) test. Must be a current United States Citizen. Must be free of misdemeanor convictions involving domestic battery as an adult unless the conviction was for a battery committed prior to July 1, 1997, and has been expunged. Must be free of felony convictions.
