Corporate Counsel

About This Role

This Corporate Counsel role at McDougall Energy involves providing strategic legal guidance across all areas of daily operations and long-term business initiatives. Reporting to the General Counsel, this position is an integral member of the Corporate Legal team. The role ensures that all departments are well-informed and compliant with relevant business, contract, and employment laws.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review, and approve commercial contracts, ensuring alignment with Company interests and legal standards
• Provide advice on the status of contracts, potential legal risks, and associated liabilities
• Manage contractual obligations and correspond with appropriate departments to ensure adherence throughout their lifecycle
• Offer legal counsel to Management on diverse legal issues and challenges
• Collaborate with various Company departments to ensure understanding and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements
• Proactively research and anticipate legal issues, ensuring the Company is well-prepared for potential challenges
• Manage insurance claim files and support insurance counsel
• Assist with the tender review process for insurance, compliance, certification, and indemnification matters
• Design and deliver training sessions on relevant legal topics for the Company

Requirements

• Law degree from a recognized university and admitted to the Ontario Bar Association
• Licensed member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario (LSO)
• 3 to 5 years of experience practicing as an in-house legal practitioner of a mid to large-sized corporation or relevant experience working at a business law firm
• Strong interpersonal and presentation skills along with the ability to communicate effectively with others at all levels of the Company and with external parties
• Strong negotiation skills and keen attention to detail
• Ability to work independently with little supervision
• Proven experience following confidentiality guidelines
