Control Room Operator

About This Role

Controlling the systems of a power plant is the core of this role, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This position suits an operator who can monitor systems, respond to alarms, and support plant startup and shutdown activities, while collaborating with on-site personnel.

Responsibilities

• Have a strong working knowledge of the ContourGlobal Health & Safety Management System and its respective safe work practices, including Permit to Work, Management of Change, and Contractor Safety
• Coach and mentor facility employees through engagement on proper safety behaviors, use of the ContourGlobal Management System and its respective expectations, and through ongoing participation in Health & Safety activities such as inspection, incident investigation, and visible felt leadership
• Verify job tasks are adequately reviewed prior to initiating work and when changes occur in the work environment or tasks requirements
• Ensure all incidents and potential adverse events (e.g., Near Misses) are quickly communicated to Plant leadership and Health & Safety site/regional support
• Lead a shift consisting of 2 other operators in the safe and efficient operations of a 2x1 combined cycle power plant
• Conduct shift meetings and ensure completion of all shift duties
• Ensure problems are swiftly resolved and/or written into the plant CMMS
• Review all rounds completed by other operators
• Conduct plant startups and shutdowns as well as responding to any abnormal plant conditions
• Maintain compliance with ContourGlobal’s safe work practices outlined in the organization's Health & Safety Management System
• Support fellow work partners to help ensure job tasks are adequately reviewed prior to initiating work and when changes occur in the work environment or tasks requirements
• Communicate any unsafe work condition or hazard to your Health & Safety Manager or Operational manager immediately
• Report any Health & Safety incident, realized or potential, to your Health & Safety Manager or Operational manager immediately
• Participate in Health & Safety activities as requested (e.g., incident investigations, inspections, effectiveness reviews, and best practice sharing)
• Ensure the daily log, efficiency reports, and other various reports are completed in a timely and accurate manner
• Conduct periodic log and record reviews to ensure that tag-out procedures, equipment status, and designated administrative systems are functioning effectively
• Participate in the administrative maintenance of Plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records
• Actively support the Maintenance team in the execution of maintenance plans by providing lock-out/tag-out support, equipment identification, troubleshooting, work request preparation, electrical and mechanical maintenance, or other areas as needed
• Fully support and actively participate in CG Safety and Regulatory Compliance Programs
• Complete other tasks as requested by the Operations Manager
• Effectively use the organizational framework to capture, implement, and reward improvement initiatives
• Encourage team members to identify and initiate improvements and innovations that will enhance the maintenance department's safety and reliability, work productivity, cost reduction, and quality of client service

Requirements

• Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment, as would be acquired in four years of high school
• Experience as a Control Room Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating Plant
• Excellent verbal and writing communication skills
• Physical requirements include standing on feet for extended periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting fifty pounds
• Adaptable and flexible

Nice to have:

• Associate Degree in a technical field
• Experience in water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations, and chemical-handling requirements
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed-system generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and inspection/recording of Plant parameters
• Experience using SAP or other CMMS
• Demonstrated experience in the direct operation of a combined-cycle-large-frame gas turbine Power Plant
• Experience with piping and instrument schematics, and process controls
• Extensive working knowledge of the Power Plant industry

Important Details

• Schedule: twelve-hour rotating shifts, with the possibility of overtime, weekend, and holiday work as required by schedules, workloads, and Plant conditions
