Contract Attorney

About This Role

This fully remote role is for an experienced California-licensed attorney specializing in insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, joining a policyholder-side insurance firm on a full-time engagement. The attorney will litigate disputes on behalf of individuals and families whose claims have been denied, delayed, or underpaid, leveraging a perspective often shaped by prior carrier-side experience.

Responsibilities

• Litigate bad faith and coverage disputes involving long-term care, disability, life, health, and related first-party policies in California state and federal court
• Analyze policy language, coverage positions, and claim files to build and pursue theories of recovery against carriers
• Draft complaints, demand and challenge letters, coverage analyses, discovery, and dispositive motions
• Take and defend depositions, argue motions, and prepare matters for mediation, arbitration, and trial
• Work directly with clients who are often navigating serious illness, disability, or the loss of a family member, and communicate with the care and clarity those matters require
• Collaborate with partners on case strategy while carrying meaningful independent responsibility for your own matters
• Manage a docket and maintain strong responsiveness in a fully remote environment

Requirements

• California-licensed attorney with 3–5+ years of insurance coverage and/or bad faith litigation experience
• Substantive command of insurance law (e.g., policy interpretation, coverage analysis, claims handling standards, and the statutory and common law framework governing bad faith in California)
• Experience from either side of the "v." is welcome; attorneys who litigated bad faith, fraud, and coverage matters for carriers, or advised insurers on coverage opinions, are strong candidates
• Comfortable working closely with clients in sensitive, high-stakes personal circumstances
• Reasonably available during West Coast business hours and effective in a fully remote setting
• J.D. from an accredited law school
• Outstanding references
