Contract Attorney

About This Role

This part-time contract staff attorney position involves managing legal sealing and expungement work for clients in Pennsylvania, ensuring their records are cleared efficiently and affordably. The role requires a licensed attorney to oversee legal reviews, document preparation, and court coordination, supporting a mission-focused legal tech startup dedicated to helping individuals overcome the barriers of criminal records.

Responsibilities

• Review eligibility analyses from Rasa's screening software and make final calls on Pennsylvania sealing and expungement matters
• Review and finalize petitions and other legal documents prepared by the legal support team, and sign as attorney of record
• Identify questions requiring legal judgment and provide clear direction to staff
• Oversee filing, tracking, and follow-up on the Pennsylvania caseload with courts and clerks
• Support district attorney outreach, including PATCH waivers, and respond to objections
• Appear at hearings when required
• Serve as the escalation point for legal questions from support staff
• Supervise the work of non-attorney staff in line with Pennsylvania rules of professional conduct
• Update Pennsylvania templates and process guidance as the law and local court practice change

Requirements

• Licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania and in good standing
• At least 2 years of experience practicing law
• Experience drafting and reviewing legal documents, petitions, or court filings
• Ability to supervise non-attorney staff and take responsibility for their work
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to spot missing or inconsistent information
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and manage time in a fully remote setting
• Commitment to Rasa's mission and to serving people from diverse backgrounds with respect and compassion

Nice to have:

• Experience with criminal record clearance, criminal law, or Pennsylvania county court procedures
• Familiarity with legal case management or document automation tools
• Experience working with justice-impacted individuals or underserved communities

• Expected hours: 24.0 per week
