Concrete Finisher

About This Role

Caring for concrete surfaces by smoothing and finishing them to specific textures is the core of this role, using various hand and power tools. The position is for a detail-oriented individual experienced in concrete work.

Responsibilities

• Spread concrete to specified depth and workable consistency, using a float to bring water to the surface and produce soft topping
• Level, smooth, and shape surfaces of freshly poured concrete, using a straightedge and float or power screed
• Finish concrete surfaces, using a power trowel, or wet and rub concrete with abrasive stone to impart finish
• Remove rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces, using a power grinder or chisel and hammer, and patch holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound
• Mold expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and a straightedge
• Sprinkle colored stone chips, powdered steel, or coloring powder on concrete to produce a prescribed finish
• Produce a rough concrete surface, using a broom
• Mix cement, using a hoe or concrete-mixing machine
• Direct subgrade work, mixing of concrete, and setting of forms, performing duties as described under Group Leader
• Specialize in finishing steps and stairways and be designated as a Step Finisher
• Break up and repair old concrete surfaces, using pneumatic tools and be designated Cement Mason Maintenance

Requirements

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent years of experience
• Appropriate training and experience required
• Work rapidly and accurately with hands
• Follow set procedures and standards
• Compare and see differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects
• Picture objects from drawings or diagrams
• Rate information using standards that can be measured or checked
• Calculate amounts of concrete required for each job
• Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy
• Ability to climb and maintain body balance
• Ability to use hands and arms fully
• Ability to stand, kneel, bend, crawl, or crouch for long periods
• Ability to see well (either naturally or with correction)
