About the role

Duties

This position is responsible for supporting the operations of the Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) Management Information’s Systems (MIS) Data Processing computer center.  Performs a variety of direct user support tasks such as installing computer hardware, software programs, and communication devices on new or ready for use computer equipment to ensure system is functional and meets end-user’s requirements.  Refers to the supervisor concerning system failures and equipment problems that do not respond to standardized corrective procedures.  Operates various computers and related peripheral equipment in accordance with prescribed operating instructions; including but not limit to line printers, modems, portable data terminals, inserting system and communication devices.  Process and distribute computer reports as required.  Performs system and application software upgrades.   Applies knowledge of general purpose computer equipment, point-of-sale, communication links (including Local Area Network (LAN), and peripheral devices, in carrying out assignments.  Performs first level assistance to end-users requiring assistance in resolving difficult problems through on-site troubleshooting (i.e., personal skills/experience, diagnostics of utilities applications, hardware modification, repair etc.).  Assists with network related requirements, specifications, and implementation to include basic network operations/installation/set-up, and troubleshooting.

Independently identifies and diagnose the nature of system and equipment  failures and initiates corrective action to resolve the problem.  On assigned portions of projects, conducts preliminary analysis and assemble data for use in recommending modifications to ensure responsive product results.  Prepares system logs and other records of computer operations including documentation of equipment operations problems, system malfunctions, systems status, etc., and any corrective action taken.    May assist in training of new employees. 

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy.  Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.  Takes action to solve problems quickly.  Ability to perform independently with minimum or no direct supervision.  Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise.  Adheres to safety regulations and standards.  Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.  Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

Maintains working knowledge of MCCS Support Activity computer operating systems and user instruction manuals.  Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Three years progressive technical experience which demonstrates working knowledge of computers, peripheral devices and/or LAN operating systems;  knowledge of various operating systems, utility software, and system interactions;  knowledge of established hardware and software testing methods, and experience with various types of wiring and connectivity standards.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing.  Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.  This is a mixed position were the incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 45lbs independently and objects over 45lbs with assistance.
