Communications Specialist

About This Role

This role involves managing communications for an assigned portfolio, ensuring all internal and external messaging is accurate and consistent with the organization's brand. The Communications Specialist supports internal clients with requests, develops communication plans and strategies, and creates content for various audiences, with significant engagement with Mi’kmaw communities and other stakeholders throughout Nova Scotia.

Responsibilities

• Manage communications for an assigned portfolio
• Ensure all internal and external messaging is accurate and consistent with the organization’s brand
• Support internal clients with communications-related requests
• Develop and implement communication plans and strategies
• Create content and messaging for internal and external audiences
• Engage significantly with Mi’kmaw communities and other stakeholders throughout Nova Scotia

Requirements

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant discipline, or commensurate experience
• Two (2) to three (3) years’ experience working in a public relations, journalism, or related role with a proven track record of successfully building a consistent brand message
• Experience in content writing, storytelling, editing, social media, public relations, issues management, brand management, event management and/or media relations
• High level of communication, including strong skills in writing for a public audience
• Strong ability to prioritize, manage projects, and think strategically
• Ability to build and maintain internal and external working relationships
• Ability to serve as a subject matter expert in all communication related information to their KMK portfolio
• Possess strong tact, diplomacy, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work efficiently individually and as part of a team

Nice to have:

• Prior experience working with Mi’kmaw and/or indigenous communities and organizations

Important Details

• Locations: Millbrook or Eskasoni, Nova Scotia
• Application deadline: October 23, 2026
• Travel: up to approximately 20% of the time, throughout Nova Scotia
• Schedule: occasional evening or weekend work may be required

• Must hold and maintain a valid Nova Scotia driver’s licence
• Provide a current Criminal Record Check
