EssentialDuties& Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.Mayperformotherdutiesasassigned.Essentialfunctionsmayinclude,butarenotlimitedto the following:
Inspects the quality of work in the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial, industrial, and residentialbuildings,andotherstructuresincludingfoundations,cement,framing,andplastering;checks plumbing,heating,andelectricalinstallation,includingfixturesandappliances;inspectsstud,joist,rafter spacing, and other structural member factors; examines the grade, treatment, and quality of building materials.
Evaluatesthequalityofmaterialsandworkrelativetoapplicablebuildingcodes,ordinances,regulations, and relative to approved plans; issues notices to identify corrections required for compliance or to stop work on projects.
Responds to verbal and written inquiries from architects, contractors, builders, City personnel, and the generalpublic;interprets,applies,andexplainsrequirementsandrestrictionsrelatedtobuildingcodes, ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures; develops alternative methods for compliance with requirements and restrictions.
Mayassistwithschedulingappointmentsandreviewingandapprovingplansincompliancewithbuilding codes, ordinances and regulations.
Decision Making Selectsfrommultipleproceduresandmethodstoaccomplishtasks.Applyorganizationalpolicies.May interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions.
Leadership Provided Hassupervisoryauthorityoverworkgroup(typicallyatleastfourtofiveemployees)toincludediscipline, performance management, scheduling, training, etc.
Knowledge,Skills& Abilities Thisisapartiallistingofnecessaryknowledge,skills,andabilitiesrequiredtoperformthejob successfully.It is not an exhaustive list.
ThoroughknowledgeofInternationalCodeCouncilBuildingcodes,relatedfederal,state,andlocallaws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; building tools and materials; methods of building construction; safety methods; principles, practices, and techniques of building inspection.
Read,interpret,apply,andexplainbuildingplans,blueprints,specifications,andbuildingcodes;make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately; use word processing and other related computer software programs; prepare and maintain complete, accurate, and concise reports and records.
Communicateclearlyandconciselyverballyandinwriting;exerciseinitiativemakingrecommendationsto management; communicate effectively with individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds; establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and organize and prioritize work.
Proficiencyinsafelyoperatingofficeequipmentincluding computers.
MinimumQualifications–Educationand Experience HighschooldiplomaorGED.Two(2)yearsofexperienceinbuildingtrades;ORanequivalentcombinationof closely related education, training, and work experience.
Threeyearsonthejobconstructionexperienceis Preferred. PreferredEducation& Experience MustpossessaminimumoffiveofthefollowingICC-recognized certifications: BoththeResidentialBuildingInspector(B1)andCommercialBuildingInspector(B2)certificationsare mandatory andcounttowardthefiverequired certifications:
Residential Building Inspector (B1) – ICC (required) CommercialBuildingInspector(B2)–ICC (required) Residential Plumbing Inspector – ICC or IAPMO Residential Mechanical Inspector – ICC or IAPMO Residential Electrical Inspector – ICC or IAEI Commercial Mechanical Inspector – ICCCommercial Plumbing Inspector – ICC

Licensures and Certifications ResidentialBuildingInspectorfromtheInternationalCodeCouncil (ICC).
ResidentialPlumbingInspectorfromtheICCorfromtheInternationalAssociationofPlumbingandMechanical Officials (IAPMO).
ResidentialMechanicalInspectorfromtheICCorIAPMO; and
ResidentialElectricalInspectorfromtheICCorInternationalAssociationofElectricalInspectors (IAEI).
