About This Role
Operating conventional, special purpose, and CNC machines to fabricate metallic parts is the core of this role. The machinist will be responsible for setting up machines, programming functions, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of machined parts.
Responsibilities
- Study blueprints, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
- Select program if available or program functions to create a part per blueprint by selecting fields to enter part and tool set-ups, considering tools needed, tolerances, material type, quantity, and resources available
- Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines
- Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media
- Run trials to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed data control
- Run machining center, including prepping parts, loading parts, starting and observing machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting machining controls, and unloading parts
- Grind, file, and sand machined parts
- Clean machined parts
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspection by checking dimensions of part per blueprint using calipers, micrometers, indicators, and tape measure
- Inspect parts according to C=0 chart
- Complete inspection form
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and general repairs on machines as required
- Complete maintenance log
- Set up and operate manual machining equipment as assigned
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One to two years related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints
- Ability to read basic measuring tools
- Strong mechanical aptitude
Nice to have:
- Previous CNC programming and set up experience
Important Details
- Physical demands: Regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel; occasionally required to walk, climb, and/or bend; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Vision abilities: Close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus
- Work environment: Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles; noise level is usually loud
