Duties
Conducts scientific studies that chemically characterize a wide variety of water samples.
Develops and applies new hydro-analytical techniques in processes used at the Yuma Desalting Plant and Water Quality Improvement Center.
Modified analytical chemistry procedures to increase efficiency and to assure the quality and accuracy of such procedures.
Evaluates methods using different extraction and chromatographic techniques, utilizing mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and other techniques.
Completes sampling, testing and reporting necessary to comply with current and evolving Federal, State and other laboratory requirements.
Acts in a consultative capacity conferring with others to resolve issues through accurate, dependable and impartial scientific analysis of a variety of issues.
Qualifications
You must first meet the basic education requirement:
Basic Requirements: A: Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B: Combination of education and experience--course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the Basic Requirements: To qualify at the GS-09 level: Your resume must reflect 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 1 year of full time professional experience performing studies, analyzing raw waters as well as processed waters found in operating water treatment facilities.
To qualify at the GS-11 level: Your resume must reflect 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 1 year of full time experience performing sample analysis and data analysis with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry in complex matrices such as soil and chemical waste streams, development of methods and troubleshooting for chromatographic sample analysis with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.
Education
This position has a mandatory education requirement; you must furnish a copy of your transcript of college work completed (unofficial copy is acceptable). Transcripts must include the name of the college or university and date the degree was conferred. Non-submission will result in you being rated not qualified for the position.
Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, applicants must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs.
