Certified Welding Inspector

About This Role

Working on construction projects, the Certified Welding Inspector performs inspections that require specific certifications and experience. This role involves monitoring quality and adherence to building code requirements, construction drawings, and project specifications, with a focus on structural steel, concrete, masonry, and fireproofing. The inspector will conduct visual/physical inspections and field testing to verify conformance, prepare reports, and communicate findings to the project team.

Responsibilities

• Perform testing, observation, and inspection in accordance with training and specified procedures to determine if work is done according to contract specifications
• Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
• Provide clear documentation of findings and results
• Prepare inspection reports and document nonconformance
• Perform basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager
• Communicate information to Project Manager and other personnel as directed by the Project Manager
• Interact with client and other site personnel to provide input on appropriate resolution of findings
• Assist Project Manager in development of scope for testing and inspection services
• Coordinate pre-dispatch activities with Project, Department, and/or Office Managers
• Maintain equipment operation and calibration
• Lead the activities of other engineering technicians on larger field projects
• Drive a vehicle such as a Ford F-150 or equivalent
• Arrive at project sites in a timely manner
• Submit clear and accurate documentation of findings and results daily
• Communicate with dispatcher, project manager, and contractor on a regular basis
• Maintain assigned equipment and vehicle in clean working order
• Follow safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects
• Follow the Smith System’s five keys to driving
• Perform pre-task planning prior to executing work
• Report any safety issues or concerns to management
• Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in construction inspection
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history
• Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)/American Welding Society (AWS)

Nice to have:

• Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Engineering Technology
• American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification: Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
