Certified Nurse Midwife

About This Role

This role involves providing comprehensive midwifery services in an outpatient clinic and freestanding birth center. The Certified Nurse-Midwife will offer reproductive, prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn, and women's healthcare services within their scope of practice and facility policies. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent clinical judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to physiologic birth.

Responsibilities

• Provide prenatal care, including risk assessment, routine examinations, patient education, and coordination of diagnostic testing
• Manage labor and vaginal birth for appropriately selected, eligible patients according to clinical protocols
• Provide intrapartum monitoring, maternal assessment, and fetal assessment consistent with applicable standards of care
• Provide immediate postpartum care, including assessment for postpartum hemorrhage and other maternal complications
• Perform newborn assessments and provide neonatal resuscitation within current training, credentialing, and facility protocols
• Recognize obstetric and neonatal emergencies, initiate appropriate stabilization, and coordinate emergency transport and hospital transfer
• Participate in clinical drills, quality improvement activities, chart reviews, and safety initiatives
• Provide routine well-woman examinations and preventive healthcare
• Provide gynecologic care, including menstrual concerns, menopause management, contraceptive counseling, and sexually transmitted infection evaluation
• Provide preconception counseling, fertility-related assessment, and reproductive health education
• Order, review, and follow up on laboratory studies, imaging, and other diagnostic testing
• Prescribe medications and treatments within applicable Virginia law, credentialing, and practice protocols
• Provide patient-centered counseling, shared decision-making, and evidence-based health education
• Maintain accurate, timely, and complete electronic health records
• Collaborate with consulting physicians, receiving hospitals, emergency medical services, and other healthcare professionals
• Participate in call coverage, birth attendance scheduling, and coordination of continuity of care
• Maintain required certifications, licensure, continuing education, and professional credentials
• Follow applicable infection prevention, emergency preparedness, informed consent, documentation, and patient safety policies

Requirements

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or eligibility to obtain Virginia licensure before beginning practice
• Graduate degree from an accredited nurse-midwifery education program meeting applicable certification requirements
