Career Coach

About This Role

Caring for diverse college students by providing career coaching is the core of this role, helping them to clarify their career interests and prepare for the workforce. The position suits a positive, resourceful, and adaptable individual with a student-centered philosophy who thrives in a fast-paced team environment.

Responsibilities

• Coach and prepare students individually and in groups, both face-to-face and virtually, on job and internship search strategies
• Help students clarify career interests, compose strong personal branding and applications, and present professionally
• Guide students on the use of Handshake and other career tools
• Conduct mock interviews and critique application materials
• Organize face-to-face and virtual programs to prepare students for the workforce
• Provide logistical support for employer-student events (e.g., career fairs, networking meet-ups)
• Use a variety of technologies to support programming and event activities
• Staff events that occur in the evenings and on weekends
• Serve as liaison to select academic departments, faculty, staff, and career-focused student organizations
• Use sophisticated career center management software and other survey tools to collect data and track placements in collaboration with VIS
• Review, approve, and promote opportunities posted in the recruitment system, Handshake
• Participate in opportunities that promote learning, growth, and development (e.g., classes, training, committees, webinars)
• Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside of the department/unit (e.g., campus-wide traditions, events, programs)
• Perform other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission
• Evening and weekend work may be required at times

Requirements

• Bachelor
• Two (2) years of full-time administrative experience (student experience may be considered)

Nice to have:

• Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher)
• Experience working with a diverse college population
• Experience with recruiting or career/academic coaching
• Experience designing and delivering presentations
• Experience coordinating and/or assisting with events
• Experience with technology applications, such as online career research databases, career networking sites, or web-based recruitment systems

Benefits

• $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly
