Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Do you want to gain laboratory experience? Do you like helping others? Are you self-motivated? Do you enjoy learning new things? If you answered yes to these questions, a position in the Department of Biology might be right for you! Job functions include:
- preparing media/reagents, aliquoting solutions, and handling chemicals
- caring for living specimens and handling preserved specimens
- moving/distributing equipment, models, supplies, and glassware
- setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting instruments and other electronic devices
- installing software, configuring, backing up, and troubleshooting computer systems
- cleaning laboratory surfaces, equipment, supplies, and glassware as needed
- communicating with faculty and staff to ensure that laboratory activities are set up, restocked, and cleaned up in a timely manner
- collecting, segregating, and/or disposing of laboratory wastes properly
- completing work assignments safely using necessary personal protective equipment and other safety devices
- assisting with inventory control, safety data sheet collection, and data entry operations
- performing other general laboratory tasks as assigned
Required Qualifications
Applicants must receive Federal Work Study (FWS) funds in their financial aid packages and be available to work up to eight hours each week. This position will allow an applicant to earn all FWS funds during the academic year. Therefore, applicants may not hold a second FWS position while working for the Department of Biology.
Applicants must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, attend training sessions, complete assigned tasks independently or within a team, demonstrate strong communication skills, and handle sensitive information in a professional manner.
Adherence to laboratory safety and health policies is required, including the use of all necessary personal protective equipment and other safety devices.
Required Education
Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at Belmont University and must major or minor in Biology, Environmental Science, Neuroscience, or Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.
Required Experience
Applicants must be currently enrolled in laboratory courses or must have taken laboratory courses within the Department of Biology.
